Daoyin the Foundations of Yin Yoga Training

Directed by Mike Ninomiya

40-hour Intensive

Daoyin is the ancient shamanic practice of daoist yoga. It is the foundation of traditional Chinese medicine, martial arts and spiritual cultivations. Yin yoga, as seen in the U.S., is derived from this much larger spectrum of Daoyin. This 40-hour intensive will explore the foundations of Daoyin and its implications for yin yoga.

We will explore the anatomy of the body’s connective tissue (tendons, ligaments, fascia), the energetic system through the lens of Daoyin (chi, meridians, intent, purging of pathogenic energy), how meditation is incorporated into a yin practice, and of course, the major shapes of Yin Yoga.

We will cover how shapes can be adapted for less flexible bodies or injuries, and how to practice safely without over-stretching. Therapeutic applications of Yin Yoga will be explored, including how to design classes that address ailments, seasonal strategies, and energy imbalances through the meridians.

5 Element Theory will also be compared and contrasted in the Ayurvedic and Daoist models. Towards the end of the intensive, concepts of energy work and how to "enter the streams" within the meridian system using consciousness and subtle body will also be covered.

The Director

Patrick HarringtonMike Ninomiya

For 34 years Mike Ninomiya has followed the path of martial arts in the pursuit of self awareness. He was born into a family of martial arts practitioners. His father is a living legend in Asia known as the modern day Miyamoto Musashi - the sword saint of Japan.

Mike has shared his passion with a following from over 90 schools around the world. He represents a new generation of yin practitioners stemming from the deep rooted Daoyin (Daoist yoga) lineage from China. Much of Mike’s experience comes from years of intensive work under his master and from exploring the depths of martial arts as a means of self realization.
